U14s Top Form Continues

posted 15 May 2013, 04:01 by Shaun-Marty Lawless

Following their first round victory last week in the Championship against Naomh Eoin, this week it was back to the league campaign against Sarsfields for the U14 boys.  In what was to be a home fixture for Sarsfields, they kindly agreed to travel to Ballyhegan Park as their pitch was unavailable.

Just before throw in a downpour made playing conditions somewhat difficult and it took both teams some time to settle.  Ballyhegan were first on the score sheet with a free by James Lee.  Following a number of missed chances, Kevin McCann was first to react to a high ball into the forward line and finished the ball to the net.  Following another free by James Lee, Sarsfields got their first point of the game to leave the score 1-02 to 0-1 after 10 minutes.  Ballyhegan continued to dominate and with Paul McQuade, James McCann and Rory McLernon and Naoise O’Hagan on top in defence it kept scoring chances for Sarsfields to a minimum.  The forwards of Sean Donaghy, Jack Hughes, Jamie McKenna  and Conor Hughes continued to put pressure on the Sarsfields defence and it allowed the midfield of Conor Fearon and Evin Crummie to push forward resulting in a fine individual goal by Evin and four James Lee points to leave the score 2-06 to 0-03 to Ballyhegan at the break.

Although constant rain meant playing conditions in the second half didn’t improve (even the referee had to get an extra coat), it was Ballyhegan who kept their work rate up and started the half as they finished the first.  Quick scores by James Lee and Evin Crummie extended the lead following good work from Sean Donaghy and Jack Gallagher.  Sarsfields to their credit kept working hard and their midfielder scored a goal and a point in quick succession to keep them in contention going into the final quarter.  Some timely interceptions by Stefan Mackey in defence and good goalkeeping by Oisin Hamill kept the visitors at bay at a time when they were pressing for more scores and the distribution into the forward line allowed the forwards to keep picking off scores.  Following good work on the left it allowed Kevin McCann to score his second goal and put some daylight between the teams.  Ballyhegan did not ease off at this and following good inter-passing between Conor Fearon and Kevin McCann the ball was worked out to John Doherty to get his first score at U14 level.  As the game was drawing to a close Evin Crummie set off on another of his jinking runs and scored another fine individual goal.  From the kick out the ball was won by Ballyhegan and moved quickly into the forward again where the ever vigilant Kevin McCann directed the ball past the keeper into the net.

Final Score Ballyhegan 5-12, Sarsfields 1-05.

Another all round solid team performance with all players contributing to a fine win in difficult conditions. Many thanks to Sarsfields for agreeing to travel to Ballyhegan Park at short notice and to referee Kieran Conlon who was excellent throughout.
