Ballyhegan Davitts v Madden Raparees

Following Friday night’s disappointing performance, Ballyhegan senior men were eager to improve in Sundays fixture at home to Madden.

The visitors dominated the opening fifteen minutes of the game, scoring four points, three from play, with only a left footed free kick from Plunkett McCormack, following a foul on Paul Courtney, in response from the Davitts.

Paul Courtney kicked Ballyhegan’s second of the game, a huge free kick off the ground from outside the 45, after corner back Mark McKeever was fouled following a burst forward.

Madden converted a free kick of their own on twenty minutes, but a minute later Mark Hughes split the posts with a looping right footed effort, Mark McKeever, Shane McCormack, and Jack Rafferty all involved in the build-up, reducing the deficit to two points.

The Raparees kicked another two points from play, before Eoin Reynolds took a quick free kick, finding Jack Wilson in space, the midfielder blasting over the bar, a kick of the ball between the teams at the whistle.

Madden extended their advantage to five, with two points at the start of the second half, but ten minutes in Eoin Reynolds kicked between the posts with his left boot, after Gerard Morgan recycled Reynolds’ initial effort off the post. The chance made from a super Jack Rafferty pass, into Paddy Marley.

The deficit was again back to three points entering the final quarter of the game, Paul Courtney superbly fetching  a high kick out, Jack Rafferty & Mark Hughes involved in the approach, and Paddy Marley finished off with a point.

With ten minutes to go, Paul Courtney converted another point, again from the dead ball, after Paddy Marley was fouled in front of goals, Ballyhegan dominant.

The visitors kicked another two breakaway points in the final five minutes, but there was still only a kick of the ball between the sides as the game entered injury time, after Jack Rafferty was upended 30 Metres from goal, Paul Courtney again converted his third point of the game from the resulting free kick.

As the brave Ballyhegan men pressed forward, Conor Morgan was seemingly taken out on a direct run at goal, unfortunately the referee didn’t see it that way, as Madden broke at pace, with men over, they were able to finish the ball to the net, in a devastating counter attack, and finishing the contest.

Full-Time: Ballyhegan 0.08 Madden 1.11

A good response after Friday night, the lads showed plenty of fight and spirit, particularly in the second half. Unfortunately it was not enough to gain anything from this game, but it lays a foundation to build upon with some local derbies on the horizon!

In Defence Joey Murphy and Roger McCormack were excellent, our midfielders put in a great shift, against difficult direct opposition and Jack Rafferty on his senior debut in attack was involved throughout.

Ballyhegan Team lined out as follows:

Jonny McKeever, M. McKeever, C. Morgan, T. Keegan, R. McCormack, P. McCormack 0.01 (1f), J. Murphy, P. Courtney 0.03 (3f), J. Wilson 0.01, G. Morgan (James McKeever, 50 ),  S. McCormack, J. Rafferty, P. Marley 0.01, M. Hughes 0.01, E. Reynolds 0.01 (J. Guy, 50)
