Sunday August 5th 2012 Junior League

Ballyhegan Davitts v O'Neill's, An Port Mór

Ballyhegan seniors hosted An Port Mór on Sunday, two teams with aspirations of winning the Junior league.

The Ballyhegan men were first off the mark, with two converted free kicks, Michael McKeever and Mark Hughes on target.

The Blackwater men responded with a point from play and in the eighth minute a high ball goal-wards was taken down by Davitt's full back, Paul Courtney, and the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line, a goal awarded.

The visitors extended their lead to five points with another three points, two from placed balls, before Ballyhegan's Shane McKeever got the Davitts back in the game, taking advantage of some confusion in the goal area. after a scuffed '45 effort, collecting the ball and finding the corner of the net, reducing the deficit to two points with three minutes of the half remaining.

There was still time for Paddy Marley to score and reduce the deficit to the minimum at half time, full forward Michael McKeever excellently out in front of his marker, collecting the ball & laying off to Marley to tap over the bar, just like dad Noel used to...

Half Time: Ballyhegan 1.03 An Port Mór 1.04

Michael McKeever spurned a glorious goal effort in the opening moments after the restart, as the big man read the bouncing ball perfectly and bore down on the goal, only to drag his shot wide of the post.

Mark Hughes levelled the sides with a nice score from 35 metres out, Conor Morgan supplying the pass, and the substitute Jack Wilson marked his return from injury with a lovely score from the wing, Davitts now in front.

The Ballyhegan advantage was extended a minute later, Shane McKeever showing excellent movement to find the ball in space, and kicked a low pass in front of Paddy Marley who, turned his marker, headed goal-wards and tapped the ball over the bar for the danger man's second point of the game.

The visitors levelled the scores again with two more points entering the final quarter of the game, just before Ballyhegan created another goal chance. James McKeever and Jack Wilson involved in the build up and the ball falling kindly to Paddy Marley, who soccer style tapped the ball wide of the post.

A tense finish ensued in this tight game, as the sides exchanged another three points each to finish the game level at the end whistle, Paddy Marley converting two free kicks and Conor Morgan bursting forward and kicking a tidy score from the right.

Jonny McKeever in nets had a solid game, varying his kick outs well & fielding three high balls, protecting his square well.

In defence, Roger McCormack had a fine match in the corner, intelligently reading the game and using his speed well to win possession, whilst Ronan Devlin on the wing caught the eye with an industrious hour.

Conor Morgan in midfield got through a lot of work, his distribution was good, and he took his point well.
