Match Report – Crossmaglen 2nds v Ballyhegan
– 22nd Aug 2012

Ballyhegan Davitts Senior Men made the long journey to South Armagh to take on a Cross team that turned out to be an impressive mix of youth and experience.
Conor Loughran, our 10k specialist, opened the scoring with a well taken point before Cross scored 1:01 without reply.  Jack Wilson then scored an excellent long range point following good work from James McKeever and Paddy Marley (1:02 0:02).
Paddy Marley then scored a great individual point before converting a free, to level the game at 1:01 0:04, won by the hard working James McKeever.
Great vision from the impressive Conor Morgan picked out Paddy Marley who excelled to create space to allow John Guy to split the posts.
Our defence was then put under sustained pressure but to their credit held resolute before Ballyhegan stretched their lead by two before the half time whistle. Once again it was the hugely impressive Paddy Marley who registered both, the first following good work from Mark Hughes the second following a Conor Morgan interception.
At half time Ballyhegan lead by three points - 1:01 v 0:07. Aidan Kelly, Conor Morgan and Paddy Marley were the stand out players for the Davitt’s.

A reoccurrence of a shoulder injury forced off the Ballyhegan captain Mark McKeever who was ably replaced by Jarlath ‘Jaffa’ McCann whilst Michael McKeever made his way to the edge of the square replacing Conor Loughran. Mark Hughes moved to centre half forward freeing Conor Williamson to operate along the wing.
Michael McKeever made an almost immediate impact with his half blocked down effort falling to the brave Jack Wilson who punched the ball to the back of the Cross net – 1:01 1:07.
Conor Morgan then showed great determination and fitness levels to force a Crossmaglen wide from what looked a clear scoring opportunity. Conor Williamson then fisted over the bar following good work from Joey Murphy and Mark Hughes – 1:01 1:08.
Crossmaglen then scored a goal & two points without reply, narrowing the difference to just two points – 2.03 1.08.
Paddy Marley then stepped up, demanded the ball and scored a fine individual point despite close attention from a number of Cross defenders – 2:03 0:09. Crossmaglen registered another point before Paddy Marley once again made a telling contribution winning and converting a free – 2:04 1:10.
John Guy once again got on the score sheet this time from an acute angle before Jack Wilson arrowed over from distance to leave the score line – 2:04 1:12.
Crossmaglen to their credit never gave up and scored a goal and a point before the referee sounded the full-time whistle, music to the ears of the small but loyal travelling Ballyhegan support.

Final Score - Crossmaglen 2nd’s   3:05            Ballyhegan Davitts    1:12

A great win and two much needed points for the Davitts with strong performances all over the park. Mel Courtney limited the experienced Cathal Short to scraps whilst Aidan Kelly put in a great shift against the dangerous Crossmaglen number 15.
Jack Wilson also deserves credit not only for scoring 1:02 from play but for his tireless work throughout.
John Guy once again did much more than the hard graft at which he excels registering 2 points from play. His midfield partner Conor Morgan was outstanding as was man of the match Paddy Marley.
