Ballyhegan Davitt's v Mullaghbawn Cúchulainns

On Tuesday night, Ballyhegan Ladies took to the field in what would be their final appearance of the year. They contested the league final with Mullaghbawn under the lights of Ballyhegan Park, in front a sizeable crowd of supporters.

They had been perfect in the league up to this point and just one more win would crown them division 2 champions.

Perhaps the occasion got to them as they started very nervously, squandering a number of chances in the first 5 minutes.

Laura McKeever was hauled down in the area, and Danielle Morgan put the resulting penalty wide, but shortly after nerves were calmed with the opening score, a goal from Sarah Morgan.

Mullaghbawn replied with a long range point, their first attack of the game, but back came the Ballyhegan ladies, Rebecca McGeary scored a point and after good defensive work from Ciara McKeever.

Clodagh McCann played Alana Finn in for Ballyhegan’s second goal.

Further points from Laura McKeever, Rebecca McGeary, Eve Lavery and Alana Finn put Ballyhegan in a commanding position midway through the half. It was a position that they were never to relinquish.

A wonderful flowing move through the middle lead to another Eve Lavery goal, and although Mullaghbawn mustered a point in reply, they could do very little to stem the flow of Ballyhegan attacks.

A surging Lisa Knox run lead to another point from Danielle Morgan and Sarah Morgan notched her second goal of the game after unselfish work from Laura McKeever. All Ireland Minor medalist, Danielle Morgan finished the half with another point to an unassailable lead at half time.

Half Time: Ballyhegan 5.07 - Mullaghbawn 0.01

The Davitt’s began the second half much like the first, the defence was totally dominant; they contested the kick outs better and never gave the opposition any time on the ball.

A full blooded block by Catherine McCormack lead to another Eve Lavery goal. Mullaghbawn scored a point in reply but it was to be their only score of the half. Ballyhegan assumed complete domination of the game, Alana Finn striking two points in succession.

A number of substitutes followed, and an inevitable lull in scoring followed.

Lisa Knox did score a free kick in front of the posts and Ballyhegan were wasteful with a number of opportunities but the damage had already been done. Ballyhegan running out comfortable winners.

Full Time: Ballyhegan 6.10 - Mullaghbawn 0.02

The result capped off a wonderful campaign by the girls team, they remained perfect throughout their league campaign, which is no mean feat. Credit goes to the dedication of the girls and to the management team of Gerard O’Hagan, Emma McKeever and the training of Plunkett McCormack. Although this was a night for the attacking players to shine, each and every one of the panel played their part in a successful season and they should all be proud of their efforts.
