Ballyhegan Davitt's v Killeavy St Monnina’s

Killeavy visited Ballyhegan on Saturday night to contest the 1st Round of the Senior Ladies Intermediate Championship. The undefeated Ballyhegan Ladies held high hopes of progression after some great form this season.

The South Armagh ladies started brightly scoring the opening two points of the game, both from play, before Lisa Knox opened the scoring for the hosts, converting a free kick from close range.

Killeavy replied in the 7th minute with a huge free kick, before Eve Lavery showed an incredible burst of pace down the left wing before slotting the ball between the posts.

A minute later corner forward Laura McKeever, took a big hit in front of the posts, Alana Finn was quickest to react & pop the ball over the bar, however the ref had already blown for the free kick, which unfortunately was missed.

In the 10th minute Laura McKeever, well recovered from the earlier hit, made a probing run goal wards, and was again awarded the free kick. Lisa Knox stepped up and hit the post this time.

Killeavy punished the Davitt’s missed opportunities and tagged over another 2 points from play, three now the difference at the half way point in the first half.

A minute later Clodagh McCann made a pacey run through the middle of the field, but was brought down before getting her shot away. Danielle Morgan stepped up this time & made no mistake pointing for the Davitt’s.

With 10 minutes remaining in the half, Laura McKeever, causing all sorts of problems for her marker, received the ball from Danielle Morgan & blasted across goal, wide of the post.

A minute later Carol McCann ventured up the field to score a neat point and reduce the deficit to the minimum.

Killeavy then had a goal chance nullified by the McCormack sisters, Brenda & Catherine, who did excellently to close out the attacker bearing down on goal.

Full forward Alana Finn then equalized from in front of the posts, however the visitors would finish the half strongest, with the final three points of the half.

Half Time: Ballyhegan 0.05 - Killeavy 0.08

Ballyhegan Midfielder Clodagh McCann collected the ball from the throw in & raced up the field to score the opening point of the half.

Killeavy then scored three points in as many minutes to increase their advantage to five points, but the Davitt’s fought back with three of their own, Laura McKeever, Carol McCann & Rebecca McGeary the scorers.

After eleven second half minutes a killer blow came from the South Armagh ladies. An attacker found herself in space, one on one with Davitts net minder Emma Guy & coolly slotted home, despite the best efforts of Brenda McCormack. The difference back to five, but still plenty of time to recover!

Davitt’s belief did not falter & Alana Finn kicked a goal effort wide two minutes later. Danielle Morgan then scored her second point of the game following some good interchange with Rebecca McGeary.

With ten minutes left Killeavy restored their advantage to five points with a free kick in front of the posts; this would prove to be the visitor’s last scoring contribution to the game.

Eve Lavery started the comeback, another incisive run and a neat finish over the bar. Danielle Morgan, again linking well with Rebecca McGeary, then scored her third of the game. & Rebecca herself got another point, the deficit reduced to two, with less than five minutes remaining.

Eve Lavery got her third point of the evening with her right boot, setting up a tense final couple of minutes.

A free kick was awarded wide on the right, Laura McKeever stepped up and from the most difficult of angles, kicked a hugely impressive equalizing point, to leave the sides level at the final whistle & set up an intriguing replay!

Congratulations to both teams for serving up a great game of football, the sizeable crowd were duly impressed!

Full Time: Ballyhegan 0.15 - Killeavy 1.12

Super effort from the Davitt’s Ladies to come from behind & force a replay, however they will be somewhat disappointed that their superior number of scoring chances was not taken advantage of.

In Defence, some early nerves were settled with the introduction of the experienced Catherine McCormack. Brenda McCormack also provided great leadership to the rearguard.

In Midfield there was a great battle, Lisa Knox & Clodagh McCann won a lot of ball & provided great impetus with their probing runs & passes.

In Attack Danielle Morgan & Rebecca McGeary picked up a lot of possession, providing intelligent ball & five points between them.

Laura McKeever & Eve Lavery were a constant thorn in the Killeavy Defence & provided a constant threat inside contributing five points to the scoreline.
