Friday April 20th 2012 Intermediate Reserve League

Ballyhegan Davitts v St Peter's

Ballyhegan reserve men hosted St Peter's on Friday night.

Davitts got off the mark first, Gerard Morgan taking a late hit and himself stepping up to kick the free between the sticks.

St Peter's responded with four points from play and threatened the Ballyhegan goal in the tenth minute but for a combination blocks from Joey Murphy and Hussam Al Janabi.

Davitts went up the other end of the field and Shane McCormack levelled the sides, throwing a dummy a driving low into the corner of the net, a clinical finish!

St Peter's again went in front with two quick points, before Conall Gallagher finished off a great counter attack, popping over a point under pressure. Aaron McNally, Gerard Morgan and both Shane's; McCormack & McKeever contributing in the build up.

The Lurgan men restored their two point lead before Conall Gallagher, in the 17th minute, scored his second of the game out on the right, again under pressure. Shane McCormack and Shane McKeever again the main instigators in the build up. A minute later Conall had his third opportunity of the game, forcing a decent save from the St Peter's keeper following excellent work from roger McCormack.

At the 20 minute mark St Peter's developed a three point lead showing fine shooting accuracy, however a five minute spell of dominance turned the game in the hosts favour. First Shane McKeever kicked his first score of the game, before Mel Courtney made a probing run into the opposition's area and sent a low drive at goal, which deflected past the keeper to put Ballyhegan in front for the first time since the third minute of the game.

In the closing stages of the half James McKeever converted a free kick extending the home side's advantage, St Peters again responded with a point, but Shane McKeever scored his second of the game, the final score of the half, leaving the Davitts in front by two at the break.

Half Time: Ballyhegan 2.06 St Peter's 0.10

Gerard Morgan got the first score of the second half also, and Shane McCormack put the Davitts four points up, Daniel McKeever, passing to Gerard Morgan who hit a clever pass for Shane to finish.

St Peters scored two quick points, but suffered another hammer blow as Shane McCormack accepted a very unselfish pass from Shane McKeever, following decent build up from Aaron McNally & Daniel McKeever, and confidently placed the ball past the keeper for his second goal of the game.

To St Peter's credit they dug in, scoring another quick brace of points, however, substitute Comghall Morgan wasted a glorious goal chance to put the game beyond the Lurgan men's reach allowing the defender time to get back and get a hand on his shot.

Shane McCormack got another point, receiving another pass from Shane McKeever after Mark Devlin intercepted a St Peter's pass now entering the final quarter of the game.

St Peter's scored a free kick and threatened another, but for Mel Courtney winning a ball in his own 21 yard line and breaking forward, resulting in Conor Loughran scoring form 35 metres.

With ten minutes remaining the Ballyhegan captain and net minder Hussam Al Janabi proved his worth catching a high ball and pinging a fine pinpoint pass 40 metres out of defence, under pressure, with the outside of his right boot. Hussam also had to make a save from a free kick a couple of minutes later, the ball destined for the top corner.

St Peter's (3) & Gerard Morgan (2) then exchanged points for the last five minutes leaving three points the difference at the final whistle of an enthralling contest!

Full Time: Ballyhegan 3.12 St Peter's 0.18

This was a super advert for the reserve league. Clean and entertaining flowing football with some really super scoring from both sides.

Davitts continue to develop the Senior men's squad.

In defence current minor players Aaron McNally and Conor McCann performed very well against pacey opposition tackling and distributing the ball very well. Roger McCormack tackled very well and started multiple attacks.

In midfield Mel Courtney fielded well and partner Daniel McKeever was heavily involved.

In attack Shane McCormack stood out scoring 2.02 from play and linked very well with Shane McKeever. Gerard Morgan also shone scoring four points.
