Intermediate Championship Semi Final

Ballyhegan Davitts v Grange St Colmcilles

The Senior Davitts Ladies team contested the Semi Final of the Championship on Saturday evening against neighbours Grange, at the neutral venue of Tullysaren.

Grange took a three point lead early in the game, a pacey half forward line causing some damage early on.

Clodagh McCann almost registered Ballyhegan’s first score with a looping effort that dropped behind the Grange keeper, hit the post and was cleared from danger.

Before ten minutes, Laura Forker isolated her marker in the full forward line, jinked to create space and tapped over the bar, for the Davitt’s first score, and a few minutes later Hayley McCann sprinted down the wing past two opposition defenders and struck a superb goal from 25metres out, to take the lead.

Unfortunately this caused a reaction in the Grange side, they kicked a goal and four points in a devastating ten minute spell, putting six points between the sides.

Lisa Knox reduced the deficit to five points before the half time whistle, coolly striking between the posts with her left foot, under pressure.

Half Time: Ballyhegan 1.02 Grange 1.07

Laura Forker got things under way in the second half converting a free kick awarded for the foul on Eimear Murray, Clodagh McCann’s drive forward creating havoc in the Grange rear-guard.

The Grange outfit kicked on, with another four points, the last of which came from great save from the Ballyhegan net minder Orla McKeever.

As the game entered the final quarter, Clodagh McCann reduced the margin to seven points with a big score from 35 metres out.

Grange kicked their last point with ten minutes to go, and the Davitt’s team now showing a sense of urgency put some pressure on now camping in the Grange half.

First Brenda McCormack kicked a nice point from play, after creating some space. Next Hayley McCann speedy run was halted illegally, Eve Lavery took the free kick quickly and Laura McKeever’s effort came back off the post.

Danielle Morgan kicked the final score of the game, converting a free kick just before the final whistle, six points the deficit at the finish.

Full-Time: Ballyhegan 1.06 Grange 1.12

Unfortunately this was a fixture where the Ballyhegan Ladies just never got going, and didn’t show their usual gusto. Best for the Davitts on the night was Clodagh McCann coming from deep & Hayley McCann the main threat in attack.

The Grange team’s big game players played very well, and proved difficult to nullify for long periods.

Congratulations to Grange, and best of luck in the final!
