Ballyhegan Davitts Ladies Senior Team v Mullaghbrack

After an opening day defeat to Crossmaglen, the Davitts got their season up and running with a hard fought victory over Mullaghbrack at Ballyhegan Park on Saturday 23 April. A number of retirements and a crippling list of injuries meant Ballyhegan had to rely on many underage players for this fixture. However this did not weaken the team in any way, Grace Ferguson and Aisling McGrane made their starting debuts and their underage teammates Blaithnaid Hendron, Lauren O’Gorman and Sarah Louise Doherty along with Amy Fay who is just out of minor football all started.

Mullaghbrack made a quick start dominating territory and possession in the first 5 minutes, however the Davitts soon got into their rhythm and flowing football with great support play saw the Davitts tick off 4 unanswered points to edge in front by one. A fast and flowing game saw both sides trade scores and halftime came with Ballyhegan up by one.

Mullaghbrack started the second half with a sweeper to combat the pace of the Davitts attacks but this gave extra space for the Ballyhegan girls to build their attacks from deep and hurt the visitors on the scoreboard. On one attack Blaithnaid Hendron got the ball to the net but the ref had already blown for a penalty. Eve Lavery stepped up to cooly slot the ball into the bottom right corner of the net. Not to be out done Blaithnaid managed to raise the green flag also with a well taken goal of her own which added to the goal scored by Edith McCormick in the first half.

With 10 minutes to go there was only a point in the game, and while management were nervous the girls were not, superior fitness and more accurate finishing meant the Davitts pulled away and finished with a four point margin of victory.

Whilst player of the match rightly goes to Eve Lavery with a total haul of 1-04 every Davitt on the field gave everything for this win. Massive credit must go to the debutants and other underage players whose energy and pace and ability were fantastic, this along with the experienced players guile and leadership gave the Davitts a deserved victory.

The challenge of this competitive league continues next Saturday 30th with an away trip to Lissummon. The Ballyhegan ladies will travel with renewed confidence.

The team lined out as follows.

Orla McKeever, Claire Lavery, Kate McCormack, Alice Guy, Lauren O’Gorman, Sarah Louise Doherty, Aisling McGrane, Eve Lavery, Ciara McKeever, Edith McCormick, Olivia McCann, Rebecca McGeary, Grace Ferguson, Blaithnaid Hendron, Amy Fay.

Sub Not used Emma Williamson.

Final score Ballyhegan Davitts 3-08 - 2-07 Mullaghbrack
