Eric Villiers to Speak at Kilmore


Activities arranged by the Ballyhegan and Kilmore Community Heritage Association for the autumn, winter and spring 2012 – 2013 commence in Kilmore Parish Centre on Wednesday 19 September at 8.00 PM


The speaker is Eric Villiers: former Portadown Times reporter and founder member of Armagh and District History Group He will have as his Subject;

John King: Ireland’s forgotten Explorer; Australia First Hero.


Born in Moy on 15 December 1838, King joined the 70th regiment aged 14. He was later posted to India and at the age of 19 was involved in some of the principal engagements of the Indian Mutiny.


Subsequently he joined the first expedition which set out to traverse from the Southern coast of Australia to the Northern coast. He was the Sole survivor

and is said to have owed his survival to the Yandruwanda tribe at Cooper’s Creek.


Eric Villiers, is the author of: John King; Ireland’s forgotten Explorer, Australia’s First Hero was published earlier this year.  This is a not to be missed opportunity to hear from the author of a book which has great local interest so soon after publication
