Belleek 1-8 Ballyhegan 2-9

This was Ballyhegan’s first outing of the year after the initial league game of the season was called off due to a water logged Ballyhegan Park. The rain during the week hadn’t let up so the surface at Belleek, which is always testing, was going to push the players to their limits.

Ballyhegan got off to a good start with points from Paul Nixon and Patrick Marley. This was followed up with a goal from Tiernan Power after Paul Nixon’s initial shot had come back off the post. Belleek came back into the game with a couple of scores of their own to show the Davitts they wouldn’t have it all their own way. Patrick Marley got on the score sheet again before a Paul Nixon goal give the Davitts a commanding lead and they should have been further in front but for some hesitancy in shooting or shots going wide.

Good movement from Ballyhegan forwards Nixon and Marley resulted in Marley being fouled for a penalty, but unfortunately Mark Hughes missed the resulting spot kick.

Belleek then went down the field to score a penalty of their own to leave the score 1-2 to 2-3. The final score of the first half came from Belleek to leave the half-time score Belleek 1-3 Ballyhegan 2-3, nothing in it.

Ballyhegan went on to kick 6 points in the second half with them coming from the boots of Patrick Marley (2), Jack Rafferty (1), Mark Hughes (1) and Paul Nixon (2).

Paul and Patrick continued to be a threat to the Belleek defence all day long and this bodes well for the games to come. Ballyhegan’s defence played it’s part in an important win as they keep Belleek to five second half points and good work from Mel Courtney at full back, along with James McAtarsney (on his starting debut) in corner back, the rest of the defence got through a lot of work, no-one more so than Conor Loughran at centre half back.

The key to getting out of Junior League over the past few years has been getting a good start to the league. This win might prove vital come the business end of the league. Next up for Ballyhegan is a local derby against neighbours Collegeland on Sunday 24
th April.
