Junior Championship Quarter Final
Ballyhegan v Killeavy IIs
Friday 11th September 2015
Ballyhegan came into this fixture on a decent run of form of late hoping to progress to their first Championship semi final since 2004. Killeavy IIs, Junior championship semi finalist for the past 2 years wanted to progress to at least that stage once again. Something had to give.
Killeavy got off to the better start, hitting the upright in the opening minute – rattling the Davitts defence early on. Ballyhegan lost midfielder John Guy to a black card a minute later, a loss to the team in what was always going to be a very physical battle. Killeavy opened the scoring after six minutes with an early goal followed up soon after by a pointed free kick and another point from play a minute later to take an early five point lead. It took until the twelfth minute for the Davitts to open their account, Paddy Marley scoring from play after being fed by Tony Keegan. Half forward Thomas Reynolds pulled another one back with well taken point off the outside of his right boot. Midfielder Mark Hughes added another to leave two between the sides a couple of minutes later. Killeavy extended the lead to three points with another point from play before a dramatic ending to the first half which would see Ballyhegan full back Mark McKeever dismissed and keeper Jonny McKeever save the resulting penalty just on the stroke of half time.
Half time score: Ballyhegan 0-03 Killeavy IIs 1-03
After a number of changes at half time, Ballyhegan came out strong and reduced the gap to a single point after three minutes of play. Paddy Marley with the first effort from a free and Mark Hughes with his second of the game. Killeavy added on another point before Marley again split the posts from a dead ball to leave the minimum between the sides going into the final quarter of the game. Killeavy converted a free kick to extend the lead again. Despite the Davitts best efforts their scores started drying up and Killeavy added a further two points from play. Ballyhean could not find the goal they so badly needed if they were to rescue the game and Killeavy ran out winner to progress on to the semi finals for another year.
Full time: Ballyhegan 0-07 Killeavy 1-08
A disappointing night all round for the Davitts. A poor first half did the damage meaning a spirited second half performance would prove futile in the end. The season is far from over though. With three more league games still to play, Ballyhegan are still very much in the promotion hunt. The first of the three games will be played this Saturday night (19th September) at 6pm away to St Michael’s Newtownhamilton.
Ballyhegan team lined out as follows: J McKeever (c), R McCormick, M McKeever, S McKeever, C Loughran (R McKeever), A Morgan, T Keegan (T Power), M Hughes 0-02, J Guy (R Devlin 2), T Reynolds 0-01, J Rafferty, J McKeever (S McKeever HT), J Murphy (C McKeever HT), P Nixon, P Marley 0-03f
