Thomas Davis Corrinshego v Ballyhegan Davitts
Ballyhegan made the journey south to Corrinshego on Sunday past hoping to build on their Championship win the previous week and get their league season back on track after 3 straight defeats.
Corrinshego had other ideas however as the game got underway and came out of the blocks flying, going 3 points up in as many minutes with a point from play, one from a 50' and another from a free kick. Undeterred by this, the Davitts hit back in fine fashion on 5 minutes with a goal from corner forward Paul Nixon after good work from Thomas Reynolds and Jack rafferty to draw the game level. Two minutes later Jack Rafferty picked out Nixon once more in front of goal and he placed it low into the net for his and the Davitts second goal. With their tails very much up now Ballyhegan pushed on once more and were awarded a penalty on 9 minutes. The Corrinshego keeper got a hand to the penalty to push it away from goal but once again Paul Nixon was on hand to tap in from close range to make it a hat-trick of goals in 4 minutes. Corrinshego hit back with a pointed free to stem the flow but Ballyhegan extended the lead on 14 minutes with Nixon splitting the posts this time. Once again the hosts pulled one back with a free kick but the Davitts replied with 4 on the trot, 2 frees from Conal McKeever and 2 from full forward Jack Rafferty to open up a 9 point lead. Corrinshego pulled one back just before the break to leave 8 points the difference.
Half time: Corrinshego 0-06 Ballyhegan 3-08
As in the first half it was Corrinshego who started the brighter but they made it last this time, hitting 1-04 in the opening 15 minutes without reply, including a penalty kick that went over the bar which would have seen them take the lead had it hit the net. The Davitts got the point they so badly needed to settle themselves in the 47th minute from a Conal McKeever free to put 2 between the sides. The game ebbed and flowed but with no score for the next 10 minutes before Paddy Marley fired over for the Davitts on 58 minutes and Jonny McKeever increased the lead to 4 with a long range free in added time. Corrinshego kept pressing but the second goal eluded them though they added another point from a free before the final whistle.
Full time: Corrinshego 1-11 Ballyhegan 3-08
An impressive yet extremely hard fought victory in the end for the Davitts following what was an impressive lead at the break. It just goes to show that to do anything in this league we have to fight for 60 minutes plus, every game. Up next for the Davitts a trip to Clonmore this Sunday 31st May.
Ballyhegan team lined out as follows: Jonny McKeever (c) 0-01f, Roger McCormick, Shane McKeever, Daniel McKeever (Tony Keegan), Mark McKeever, Rory McKeever (Joey Murphy), John Guy (Mark Hughes), Ronan Devlin, Thomas Reynolds (James McAtarsney), Paddy Marley 0-01, James McKeever (Tiernan Power), Conal McKeever 0-03f (Shane McKeever), Jack Rafferty 0-02, Paul Nixon 3-01
