Sunday July 24th

Ballyhegan Davitt's v Laurence O'Toole's, Belleek

The good weather continued on Sunday, a hot, sun drenched Ballyhegan Park welcomed the senior men’s of Ballyhegan and Belleek. Davitt’s eager to recover from a Friday night drubbing in Annaghmore and Belleek looking to add to their recent improvement in form, in their fight against relegation.

Belleek started brightly, a Goal in first minute followed up with a point three minutes later.

Eoin Reynolds opened the scoring for the hosts in the 7th minute, striking off the left boot.

A minute later Paddy Marley ran through and clipped the ball over the bar, following good work from Mel Courtney & John Guy.

Paul Courtney then kicked a huge point from 40 metres out after James McKeever showed some skill to create space.

Belleek followed up kicking three points from play in as many minutes.

After 20 minutes Eoin Reynolds converted his second score of the game, the opportunity presented by Paddy Marley and Paul Courtney hit a big free from 45 metres out.

With four minutes remaining in the half Belleek tagged another point on to their score-line.

A minute later Paddy Marley got fouled & converted the resulting free kick.

Eoin Reynolds then scored another point, this time uing the outside of his right boot; following an impressive drive forward from centre back Plunkett McCormack. The deficit now reduced to the minimum.

In the closing stages of the half Ballyhegan had great goal chance. A super through ball from Paul Courtney, found Niall Fearon through on goal, but his shot on the half volley was easily saved by the keeper & the resulting scramble ended with the South Armagh men clearing the ball.

Half Time: Ballyhegan 0.07 - Belleek 1.05

Two minutes after the interval, Paul Courtney hit the score of the game. Joey Murphy supplying the cross field pass, and Paul Courtney from wide on the right (club room’s side) fired over an impressive point with the outside of his right boot, leveling the sides.

A minute later James McKeever sold his marker a dummy and struck a nice score with his left boot.

In the 8th minute of the second half Paddy Marley made an incisive run into the Belleek’s area, and clinically finished the ball in the top corner of the net putting the Davitt’s four points up.

A few minutes later Shane McCormack was fouled in the area, following a blistering run from substitute Philip Kelly, the referee awarded the penalty kick. Eoin Reynolds stepped up and blasted the ball over the bar, for his fourth point of the game.

Paddy Marley amazingly hit both posts with a free kick a few minutes later ending Ballyhegan’s dominant 15 minute spell.

A minute later Belleek scored a goal against the run of play to bring them right back into contention.

Eoin Reynolds replied for the Davitt’s, scoring his fourth point from play & fifth point overall; Paul Courtney impressively fielding the high ball and Jack Wilson supplying the final pass.

Unfortunately that would prove to be Ballyhegan’s final score of the game. In the final ten minutes Belleek would hit a goal and three points to take both points on offer in their fight against relegation.

Full Time: Ballyhegan 1.11 - Belleek 3.08

Davitt’s displayed some impressive football in spells & were seemingly in total control five points up half way through the second half. However, the South Armagh opposition showed greater hunger for the points, and ran out comfortable winners in the end.

Mel Courtney & Plunkett McCormack showed well in defence, whilst Paul Courtney was the stand out player on the field: fielding, tackling & always in support, capped off by converting three super points.

Eoin Reynolds & Paddy Marley impressed in the forwards scoring 1.07 between them.

Ballyhegan will have to put this disappointing weekend behind them as the Championship approaches.
